Anxious Clubbers
Project by Sophia Reedijk
during the plusweeks
Monday 14th
Feedback with Kimmy
We talked about the overal project and more
indepth about the subject of the painting and how I’m going to paint.

We concluded that I shouldn’t take a subject in mind since that’s not how I like to work. I’m more focussed on the overal composition of forms and colours.
She gave me some helpfull tips to still push myself in a certain direction by making a set of rules just like in the beginning of the year.
She advised me to maybe paint one canvas without fixing mistakes and the other one I would be fixing. This would have to do with the fact that I’m often too focussed on the end result of my work and that I should allow myself to play more.
Or I could apply strict rules to one canvas and the other I would paint without any restrictions.

Plus doing some background research on certain art movements such as the Fluxus movement or a specific artist could be beneficial for the proces.
Today's activities
- bought 2 canvasses 75 x 115 cm
- bought some basic paints, blue and creme
- bought gesso to prime the canvas
Tuesday 15th
Primed both canvasses and trying to figure out how to make a decent studio in my room for the coming two weeks.
Today's activities
- bought 2 x 1 liter bottle of paint in preferred colours.

- bought a light modelling paste, recommended to me by an employee of Harolds.
She explained to me how each brand has
different modelling pastes and that there’s multiple hardnesses to choose from.
I chose light since the canvasses are quite big and they have to stay transportable and flexible (this one has a high elasticy).

- plus I bought 2 big paintbrushes.

This cost me a bit too much but it’s for a good cause I guess.
Rules I will be giving myself for the painting proces
- has to have some kind of texture, through
layering with Modelling Paste.
- Has to have a certain colourscheme which I will decide on
- I have to use a way to reveal paint underneath like Daisy Parris does in this painting she made.
‘Tissues ii’, oil paint and collage on canvas. (2020)

She used cutup fabric she already painted and applied this to the canvas (not really revealing the paint underneath). I’d like to tape something in the painting to paint over it and eventually remove.
Wednesday 16th
Sped up proces video, applying the first bits of paint. 1,20 min
I decided on working with greens and blues since they're simply my favorite colours.
I didn't put much thinking in these first layers of paint. I wanted to make a base for the other additions I would eventually be painting over.
Thursday 17th
Started the day of with painting these black geometric shapes. Plus using a cutout paper shape to paint a circle.
Mixing in lighter paint for some contrast. At this point I was basically looking just at the composition and keeping my colourscheme in the back of my mind
Friday 18th till 22rd
I made the mistake of not incorporating the fact that I still had to finish my theory assignment from term 1.1 in my plusplan.

This made sure I didn't have the entire second week to paint which was unfortunate but luckily I was able to hand in the document, also very important.
Wednesday 23rd
Started off with making this sketch of two creatures on the canvasses.
I completely skipped the idea of trying to work purely with rules and just a vague idea with what the paintings would eventually look like.
I felt that the canvasses needed two main subjects which would look better then just the abstract situation it was before.
Painted a white base for the creatures and made sure to paint around the perfect circle.
I gave the right creature some extra shapes so it almost looks like a mutated dolphin.
Thursday 24th
Thought it would be best if the first creature had an eye as well so I made another paper cutout that was fitting for the shape.
I tried experimenting with the modeling paste which I spent too much money on which was a complete failure.
The modeling paste didn't fit the style of the painting at all, I felt like it would be more suitable for a big lively composition of flowers for instance.
Idea!
I was looking at the paintings for a while when the thought of painting a pattern on both creatures occurred.
I would draw a pattern with pencil and eventually paint over it with paint.
A bit more detailed sketch
I would stretch the pattern over both creatures so it looks like they're wearing some kind of suit.
Both creatures will get an eye in the colour of the others outfit.
The orange and pink spots are to show which colour their outfit will be.
I thought it would be perfect to name it Anxious Clubbers since they both look away and will be wearing a festive outfit.
Also with the opening of clubs on Friday I thought it would be a suiting name for my last project of this schoolyear.
Coming days
I will be buying neon orange and pink paint to complete the outfits of the two anxious clubbers and finish some other details in the painting.
Overal these two weeks were very fun regarding the painting proces but the fact that I still had to complete theory was less fun.

I realized that painting on large canvasses isn't that intimidating as it seems and I will definitely be trying it again.

I did let go of the rules I gave myself at the beginning of these weeks but I still think I challenged myself enough.
The goal for myself was being able to navigate my own painting proces on a bigger canvas and be content with what I would come up with (spontaneously).
